6 Facts About Transpersonal Psychology

A Brief History of Transpersonal Psychology – S. Grof

What is psychospiritual?

Psychospiritual is an integrated approach that takes into account the physical, consciousness, emotional and spiritual aspects of human BEing. The Psychospiritual approach incorporates methodologies both from western conventional medicine and what is considered as “alternative or holistic” treatments that come from the traditional earth and spiritual based cultures.

Here’s an excellent excerpt from The Psychospiritual Clinician’s Handbook: Alternative Methods for Understanding and Treating Mental Disorders” that illustrates further how qualified psychospiritual clinicians work.

“For most of the history of psychology and psychiatry, there has been a focus on the negative aspects of mental health, involving the diagnosing and treating of diseases and disorders. In recent years, however, there has been a move toward “Positive Psychology,” in which (as the name implies) the focus is on the positive aspects of mental health. Psychological changes and symptoms throughout the lifespan are seen as having the potential for positive growth that can be incorporated into the treatment process rather than a pathologic process that needs to be eliminated or suppressed. Additionally, over the past few decades, practitioners are seeing more and more people who may not have a clinical diagnosis yet feel there is something ‘missing’ in their lives.

For too long, mind and body were considered separate entities, but great strides have been made in the past few decades with regard to recognizing the interconnections between the mind and body in disease and health. However, many practitioners are still neglecting a third entity—the role of spirituality in health and healing. Recent research is indicating that spirituality plays a significant role in health and longevity. (Granted, more research needs to be done, and many studies are in a process, as described in the book’s Introduction.) Yet, spirituality is rarely present in the therapy session.

Spirituality should not be confused with religiosity, as the 2 vary in distinct ways (and this distinction is discussed throughout the book). When utilizing spirituality in therapy, the practitioner must take into consideration the individual’s personal belief systems and help him or her derive a concept of spirituality that is a unique fit. The client’s religious views (or lack thereof) may or may not be related to his or her spiritual philosophies. As John E. Mack, M.D. points out in the first chapter, ‘Clinicians must be able to approach individuals who present with unfamiliar or extraordinary experiences from a perspective that is unbiased and open-minded’ (p. 18).”

Invitation inclusion disclaimer (for online Wombyn groups):

While the majority of the groups are led from the womb perspective, groups are inclusive to our sisters that have the physical absence of the womb. Those sisters are encouraged to bring this up with the group leader so that group knowledge can include your experience. This can be an integrative learning experience for all of us. Sisters who do not have their womb in this incarnation, if you are sincere and your intentions are pure; you are welcomed in our temple. It’s important that we honor the differences of the feminine experience. Having a womb and the potential for creation IS a major component of the woman experience, but it is not the only dimension of the divine feminine. This group also welcomes the variety of sexual orientations our sisters express. Again, if you are aligned with BEing a woman and are intentionally wishing to bring the divine feminine online in alignment and be a personal beacon of feminine light to the collective, to assist in the rise of the Goddess, WELCOME! Let me know how I can be of assistance to you. I will also be holding workshops and groups in the future that pertain specifically to those women I speak about here. These workshops are not meant to exclude; all sisters in alignment with the divine feminine, with a desire to deprogram and further develop her unique strengths, are welcome, it is time we honor diverse experiences that the feminine is expressing.
